    Folding Electric Bike Reviews

    electric bike sunset

As mentioned above, we have selected the 6 e-bikes for this round up based on a nember of factors. We have then chosen 3 as leaders in their category.

Below you will find our overall leading folding electric bike. We have also selected our favourite budget option, as well as the highest performing folding mountain e-bike.

So if you’re ready, let’s take a look.

    1. TOP PICK: NAKTO Electric Bicycle Sporting Shimano 6 Speed Gear EBike

Our top pick folding electric bike for 2019 is this wonderful offering from NAKTO.

With its 250W high speed brushless motor, this 6 Shimano geared beast is capable of up to 23mph in the right conditions.

The bike is compact and features a quick-release clamp to assist the user in folding it away. Also, the reduced dimensions make this perfect for storing in the trunk of your car, or for minimum obstruction at home.

The Nakto provides a choice of operation modes, giving you the option to expend energy with pedal assist, or just sit back and enjoy the ride without pedalling at all. (There’s also normal bike mode should you wish to save on battery).

Range per charge does of course vary depending on which mode you choose, however, you can expect 19-25 miles on a full charge.

Recharge time is very good with the lightweight, 36V lithium cell battery taking just 3-4hrs. This makes it possible to charge the bike while you are at work should you be using the Nakto as a commuter vehicle.

The maximum weight the bike can take is 250-350lbs, for more specification details see tab below.

    The Cons
    • This is not a lightweight bike at 55lbs
    • Some customers have complained that the after sales support is slow.

    Bottom Line

Overall the Nakto balances features, power and price point in a way that makes it the top of our list for 2019.

There’s good range on the battery, it is very easy to fold away and the removable battery make the Nakto nice and simple to charge before use.

What more could you ask for?

    2. SwagCycle Pro Folding Electric Bike

The SwagCycle is a premium folding electric bicycle that delivers in many ways. Similar to the technologically advanced electric scooter the company has released, (reviewed here); the SwagCycle pro has the ability to Bluetooth connect to your phone for extra features.

Simply connect your iOS or Android device with the installed and you have the tools you need to track the GPS locations of your trip, speed and other data.

The bike also has a built in USB port meaning you can keep your phone (or any other USB powered device) fully charged as you go.

The Pro has a good amount of power under the hood. Capable of a top speed of 18mph in electric mode it does fall short of our top pick from Nakto, however this is still sufficient enough speed for most users.

Torque levels are good too, with the bike capable of climbing inclines of up to 12 degrees using just the power provided from the zero emission motor.

However, the downside for some will be the fact that this is a completely pedal free cycle. There’s no such thing as pedal assist here. Run out of juice and you are walking the bike back to the nearest charge point.

The built in battery gives the rider up to 15.5 miles of range, (again short of the Nakto but still competitive).

The frame and overall build quality are a highlight on the SwagCycle with a maximum capacity of 264lbs. The unit is collapsible within seconds too.

The powerful LED light is a nice addition from a safety perspective and will help ensure you are seen by other road users.

    Specifications:
    • Frame: Aluminum
    • Weight: 30 lbs
    • Wheels: 12″ front wheel and 10″ rear wheel
    • Folding stem/handlebar
    • USB charging port
    • Motor: 350 watts
    • Top speed: 18 mph
    • Battery range: 15.5 miles
    • Colors: black or white
    • IP54 water-resistant rating
    • Brakes: front and rear disc brakes
    • LED headlight and brake light
    • iOS/Android app monitors speed, battery life, GPS route and more
    • Maximum rider’s weight: 264 lbs
Pros of the SwagCycle Pro Folding Electric Bike
    • Adequate motor capable of 18mph top speed
    • 5 miles of powered cycling from one charge
    • Good weight capacity and strong, foldable design
    • Excellent connectivity with the SwagCycle 2 app providing you real-time data
    • Built in USB charging port for your devices
    • Capable of climbing inclines up to 12 degrees
    The Cons
    • The top speed and distance range all fall short of the Nakto
    • There are no pedals meaning once the battery is flat, you are pushing the bike.

    Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a fun electric bike with some great features and Bluetooth connectivity, then this is one of the best foldable’s available.

Just be warned that without the pedals you do not want to go too far afield and risk running out of battery away from a charge point.

    3. BEST FOLDING MOUNTAIN BIKE: Ancheer Folding Electric Mountain Bike

Our top pick folding electric mountain bike is this 26” model from Ancheer.

Named the Power Plus, the manufacturers have certainly delivered with the sheer grunt you can expect from this machine.

The 250w stable motor will give you up to 30 miles in range (depending on terrain) at a top speed of 15mph.

The bike also features a 21 speed Shimano gear system and is equipped with a 36V 8AH lithium-Ion fast charge battery.

The long range is due in part to the lightweight design of the bike. The ultra-lightweight yet strong aluminium frame, along with dual shock absorption and large 26” magnesium alloy integrate wheels make for a very comfortable ride in even the roughest of landscapes.

The frame and high carbon steel forks are also coated in an anti-rust and anti-exposure painting material in order to increase longevity after sustained use.

There’s also mechanical front and rear disc-brake system for safety as you careen down the mountainside.

The bike comes with 3 working modes, full ebike (completely propelled by the motor as you sit back and enjoy the ride), pedal assist (you pedal too prolonging battery life) and normal bike mode.

Ancheer provide a one-year warranty for the electric motor, the battery and other components (the frame is not part of this cover however).

Note: If bought online the bike arrives 85% assembled. This should not present too much of a problem however, as the final assembly is not difficult. A fully assembled option is available at extra cost mind you.

    Specifications:
    • Full Length: 64.4 inch
    • Seat Height: 30.4-39 inch
    • Wheel Diameter: 26 inch
    • Handlebars length: 26.7 inch

    • Battery weight: Around 2.2kg
    • Maximum Mileage: 30mph
    • Type: Mountain Bicycle
    • Load capacity: 150kg
    • Maximum speed: 15mph
Pros of the ANCHEER Power Plus Electric Mountain Bike
    • Lightweight yet robust design with high quality materials – more than suitable for off road terrains.
    • Powerful motor with 30 mile range
    • Oversized tires and large 26” wheels
    • High carbon steel suspension forks and disc-brake system as standard
    • One year warranty
    The Cons
    • Top speed isn’t that impressive at 15mphs
    • Doesn’t come fully assembled

    Bottom Line

Overall the Ancheer Power Plus is a high quality electric folding mountain bike that is perfect for those that want to go all terrain but need the convenience of being able to store their bike easily and have some electric assist to match.

Build quality is top-notch here and the power provides ample range. It’s just a bit of a shame the top speed wasn’t higher.

All the same, this is the worthy winner of our best folding electric mountain bike for 2019.

    4. VTUVIA Folding Electric Bicycle with 500W Motor

The VTUVIA folding electric bike is a good option for those needing the extra power that the 500W motor delivers.

It does come at a higher price point than some of the other bikes in our top 6 however, the specifications do speak for themselves.

The high speed brushless motor is powered by a 48v Li-ion (removable for convenient charge) battery.

This makes the bicycle capable of speeds up to 28mph and an impressive range of close to 55 miles depending on rider mode.

There’s 3 modes available here, ‘booster riding’ which is basically pedal assist. With this you do some pedalling but feel yourself being propelled along with the motor too.

The second mode is pure electric, you sit back and relax. The third option is traditional cycling without the motor engaged.

The bike comes with a premium gearing system from Shimano. The manufacturers have opted for a 7 speed model here with Karasawa disc brakes front and rear.

Build quality is another area where the VTUVIA shines. High strength 6061 aluminium alloy has been used for the foldable frame. Aluminim alloy is also the material of choice for other componennts such as the pedals and wheels.

Off roaders are well catered for with the Kenda 20” X 4.0” 60 TPI fat tires. All of this goes towards a bike that has a maximum weight capacity of 350lbs (the highest in our top 6).

The bike is also waterproof in rain or snow and features a hydraulic suspension for  a more comfortable ride.

    Specifications:
    • Battery: 48V*12Ah long lasting Li-ion battery
    • Motor: 48V*500W rear hub brushless motor

    The Cons
    • Expensive
    • Large so no ideal for commuter use

    Bottom Line

For those looking for a high performance electric bike with specs to match, this is the one to buy. Be prepared for the high price point however.

    5. BEST BUDGET: Shaofu Folding Electric Bicycle

The Shaofu folding electric bike is our best budget folding electric bike for 2019 for good reason.

Not only does it come in at a very affordable price point, the bike features a highly collapsible frame making it a great commuter option due to its smaller than average dimensions.

The removable 36V 8AH lithium Ion battery is nice and convenient to charge on or off the bike, making it easy to top up the levels while at work.

Another real plus point is that depending on terrain and selected ride mode, you can expect up to 12 miles range from a full battery. The maximum speed from this 350W bike clocks in at 15mph.

There’s 2 working modes on offer here, full e-bike or assisted pedal. Normal cycle mode is not available however.

The build quality is more than satisfactory, with the front forks made from high-strength carbon steel and (comfort shock absorption is also built in); double layer aluminum alloy wheels also provide the durability you need for daily use.

All of this makes for a good load capacity of 265lbs.

Stopping is taken care of via front and rear disc braking systems. The bike also comes with a bright LED headlamp as well as a loud horn for safer riding and visibility.

    • Superior build quality with carbon steel forks and front and rear disc brakes
    The Cons
    • Only 2 ride modes
    • Should only really be used on flat terrain

    Bottom Line

Overall, the Shaofu Folding Electric Bicycle is a great option for commuters, (assuming you will not be riding on too many steep inclines).

It folds away easily into reduced dimensions and has a convenient on or off the bike charging system.

The 12 mile range should accommodate most daily commutes too. Well worth checking out.

    6. ONWAY Fat Electric Ebike

The Onway Fat electric folding bicycle is another model that features above average specifications for those looking for a premium cycling option.

Lifting the lid here and you have a 350W powerful rear hub motor. This is powered by a 36V, high efficiency lithium battery.

That’s all well and good, however the important variable is of course top speed and maximum range.

The Onway does not disappoint in this department. That power combo of motor and battery provides a maximum distance of 50 miles putting into the same ball park as the Vituvia reviewed above.

The top speed is less impressive at 18 mph however.

Riders of all shapes and sizes are well catered for with the max weight capacity being 300lbs. The bike is adjustable to accommodates users from 5’ 2” tall right up to 6’ 4”.

The build quality is what you would expect from a premium priced electric folding bike. A lightweight 20” aluminum alloy frame has been opted for, with high quality components such as the aluminum suspension forks and KENDA 20” x 4.0” oversized tires.

As with many other models in our top 6, the bike features 3 riding modes; full electric, assisted and traditional cycling.

Buyer’s are warned that a little assembly is required upon purchase however only a few minute’s work is needed.

    • Expensive

    Bottom Line

The ONWAY Fat Electric Bike is another option for those looking for a premium folding electric bike. With the oversized tires and robust, high quality build this is suitable for all terrain riding.

A great option but in our opinion although the specs here are better, the Ancheer foldable mountain bike is the one to go for.

Factors to consider when buying a folding electric bike

Buying an electric bike can be daunting. With the range of models available knowing what is the best for you can be a difficult task.

And while the reviews above will hopefully give you an insight into what is available, you may still wish to go out and do your own research before you buy.

So with that in mind we have come up with 7 important areas you should consider when buying a folding electric bike.

    Let’s take a look.

    Maximum Range

Range is one of the most important considerations and is a question that most people ask when shopping for an electric bike.

The problem here is that maximum range really is dependent on a lot of other variables.

Rider weight, terrain, wind speeds, tire pressure, whether the bike is being used along side pedal assist; all of these will impact the range you can expect to get out of an electric bicycle on a single charge.

That being said, the range that manufacturers state in the specifications for a bike, (and the values we have used above) are a good rule of thumb.

It is best to see those specs as best case scenarios. i.e that is the range you can expect to get with an average sized rider, flat terrain, optimum tire pressure etc.

This then gives you a measure with which to compare different bikes.

Essentially, there is no reason to buy an expensive (and heavy) folding all terrain bike with large batteries and a range of 50 miles, when all you need the bike for is a short 10-mile city commute.

You need to consider the type of range that is important for you and your specific needs.

    Battery Type and Size

The battery is a vital component to an electric bike and the size and quality of the battery will have a significant impact on the performance (and price) of the vehicle.

In relation to the first point of maximum range, a bike capable of vast distances on one charge will have a superior battery that can hold more charge for longer.

The practicalities of that are one thing to consider, however the other significant issue with batteries is predicted life span.

The quality of the battery cells (and their longevity) will often be reflected in the length of warranty the manufacturer offers on the battery.

With that in mind, a brand offering a two year warranty on the included battery, clearly has more confidence in that component  than a company only offering 6 months (or some times none at all).

Lithium-based batteries are used on most electric bikes today. The specs may also state the number of recharge cycles you can expect with the battery.

Common values here are between 500 and 1,500. In short, the higher the better.

    Motor Size and Power

When looking at motor size and power it is good to consider the type of terrain you will be riding on.

A flat, short commute does not require a large, battery power draining motor. You will generally want small, efficient and lightweight in those circumstances.

Lots of hills or planning on going off-road, a large 350W – 500W motor would fit the bill.

Again, the overall quality and reliability of this component can be reflected in the warranty provided. Look for something generous.

The trade off with a higher watt battery is that the extra power requires better batteries. This all begins to push the price of the bike up.

There is also the type of motor to think about.

Electric bikes come in two main drive styles; the mid-drive with the motor mounted around the pedals or front chain rings, and hub-drive with the motor being inside the hub of the wheel.

Some basic factors to consider about motor drive styles:
    • A mid-drive motor normally provides more torque which is better for hilly terrain
    • A geared hub motor is generally more efficient and will provide you with greater range
    • A simple motor will have less internal components so there will be less that could possibly go wrong with it.
    • A larger motor may have more power but range will be sacrificed unless a suitable sized battery is provided. (However, weight and price point will go up too).

Riding Modes: Pedal Assist / Throttle

The two main riding modes and motor engagement are pedal assist and throttle.

On a pedal assist electric bike the motor will be engaged once the pedals are turned. The motor will then add power to the cycling motion, propelling you forward.

Throttle engagement does not require any pedalling from the rider, simply twist the handle throttle and the motor will engage much like an electric scooter or moped.

Bikes are available where both pedal assist and throttle engagement can be used.

There is also the number of riding modes to consider. A bike with no pedals at all, (and therefore throttle motor engagement only) will not give you the option of normal cycling should the battery run out.

Also, this type of bike is less efficient as it doesn’t give you the opportunity to use your own pedalling motion to propel the vehicle.

Being completely reliant on the battery power clearly has disadvantages.

Most electric bikes with pedals will give you pedal assist mode (where you are pedalling and the motor adds power too), full electric mode (without you pedalling at all) and full traditional cyclist mode, (i.e non electric).

In our opinion an electric bike with that level of versatility is the recommended option.

    Weight

We have touched on weight a few times above and this variable is very much down to your intended use.

If you’re a commuter that will be carrying the folded bike on and off trains, or in and out of the office building, weight will be important. You will need something as light as possible.

Conversely, a rider that wants to go all terrain will want a studier bike with a more robust build. Here weight is not such an issue. In fact, a heavier bike will often be preffered.

    Folding Function

    folded electric bike

Folding electric bikes will vary in just how compact they will get once folded. Similar to the thought process above, a commuter will want a bike that can be folded in seconds and takes up minimum space.

Having said that, a bike that folds to a more diminutive state is clearly beneficial no matter what the circumstances are for your riding.

Check the folded size specifications for your chosen bikes to see how they compare.

    Comfort

upright style electric bikeThere’s a few variables that will impact the comfort level of a bike.

Riding style is one, does the design of the bike create a complete upright position on the seat? (many folding commuter bikes do this) or is it more of a classic step thru posture, (a folding mountain bike or larger city rider will provide this).

There’s also type of seat, size of tires to consider. Fat oversized tires will be a treat for off-terrain riding, as will a full suspension fork set up.

A flat city rider will not require these things for extra comfort. If possible it is a good idea to trial the bike first as this is the only way to really know if the style and type of components will suit you and your desired comfort levels.

    After Sales Support & Warranty

    foldable electric bike

We have touched on warranty levels a few time already. Essentially, a long, generoud warranty on the bike and its components shows confidence from the manufactuerer that the vehicle has been built to last and that they are ready to standby its quality.

Check these details and remember that a good warranty does give peace of mind and could easily save you money in the long run.

Check the reputation of the brand too. Is It U.S based making it easier for you to contact someone should problems arise.

A cheaper, Chinese shipped electric bike may seem like a good idea at purchase (it’s nearly half the price of the competition!) but if problems occur do you have much standing?

In short high quality electric bikes should have a generous warranty, read the small print and have a clear idea of what you can expect in the way of support.
